Howdy, I’m Michael and I love makin’ stuff!
I grew up in a small town in Washington State and now I live in a small town in Massachusetts, so I call both the Pacific Northwest and New England home.
I’m a one-man show here at Folksong Pottery. Every piece is handmade on the wheel, hand-carved, glazed, and fired in my small home studio. The whole process takes weeks and involves tons of steps to get from a lump of clay to a mug - it’s a lot of work, but I friggin love it. Turning mud into something meaningful is just a magical thing to me.
In addition to making pots, I also teach classes at a local studio, mostly to brand-new potters. It’s one of the most gratifying things seeing people light up and turn into kids again as they mess around with clay.
About Folksong
My pottery carvings are inspired by folk art and folk music. I love making pieces that tell a story, and nothing does that quite like a good folk song, when the lyrics take their time painting a little world, making you pause and wonder, plucking at your heartstrings.
I’m also inspired a lot by memories of growing up in a relatively rural part of the country. Rolling hills and wheat fields, the lavender in my mom’s garden, the retro designs on the mixing bowl passed down from my grandma.
I love making things that feel nostalgic, that can be used every day as functional art, and that are hopefully beautiful and special enough to share with your loved ones.
