About the Potter

Howdy, I’m Michael and I love makin’ stuff!

I grew up in a small town in Washington State and now live in a small town in Massachusetts, so I call both the Pacific Northwest and New England home.

I’m a one-man show here at Folksong Pottery. Every piece is handmade on the wheel, hand-carved, glazed, and fired in my small home studio. The whole process takes weeks and involves lots of steps to get from a lump of clay to a mug. It’s a ton of work, but I love every bit of it. There’s something magical about turning mud into something meaningful.

Alongside making pots, I teach classes at a local studio, mostly to brand-new potters. Watching people light up, get their hands dirty, and get excited about making something out of nothing is one of the most gratifying parts of what I do.

About Folksong

My pottery carvings are inspired by the timeless beauty of folk art and folk music. I love making pieces that tell a story, and nothing does that quite like a good folk song, when the lyrics take their time painting a little world, making you pause and wonder, plucking at your heartstrings.

My designs often come from memories of growing up - the rolling hills and wheat fields around my hometown, the lavender in my mom’s garden, the retro designs on the mixing bowl passed down from my grandma.

I love making pottery that feels nostalgic, pieces you can use every day that feel special and meaningful.
